An Air of Beauty

Staci Richburg, Airbrush Makeup Artist
Staci Richburg has practiced makeup and hair artistry for over 11 years in editorial, music videos, weddings and special events with a specialty in the airbrush technique. Her most recent credits include World Bride Magazine Spring/Summer 2007 issue, Time Out New York "Evening Eye" March 8, 2007 issue and Essence "Hair" August 2006 issue.

Staci explains, "The airbrush technique is specifically designed for a quality finish on skin, less retouching in photographs, and few if any touch ups."

Looks Natural
"There's a misconception that airbrush makeup looks heavy when just like any other makeup application, it's all about the technique," Staci explains. "When applied correctly, airbrush makeup continuously looks natural like second skin and feels weightless without looking made up."

Safe Ingredients
The makeup is delivered through a spray air compressor, depositing a light mist. "It's safe," Staci impresses. The ingredients in airbrush makeup formulas are FDA approved.

Quality Cost
As with anything of quality, cost is relative to your satisfaction. First, airbrush makeup should be professionally applied, not only for the artistic precision and self-indulgence, but safety as the spray is applied with the eyes closed. Depending on the makeup artist rate, the incremental cost for airbrush over regular bridal makeup application (as little as $100) may be a savings compared to having to pay the artist to be available after the ceremony and through out the reception for touch ups. The cost of airbrush makeup is also valued in its high performance — it is pricier due to the higher quality pigments and formulas that are now on the market.

Covers Flaws
The additional bonus benefit is that airbrush makeup can cover any skin demarcation even stretch marks. It can be applied on the body; the pigment of the formula is just adjusted for fuller coverage.

Airbrush Makeup: De-mist-ified

Staci simplifies how to select between the airbrush makeup options: skin type or location. "Airbrush makeup has different finishes that work better depending on the occasion and individual's skin texture."

Definitely spend the money for a consultation to have the makeup artist determine your skin type and the best finish option. "If someone is getting married near a pool or on a beach where sweat is a concern I would recommend waterproof just as I would for a model under hot lights of a photo shoot all day. It all depends, sometimes for the skin type and client's desired makeup look, I may apply a hybrid half gloss, half matte," Staci advises.

Airbrush Makeup: Wedding Day Mist is a Must

If your wedding day look wish list includes makeup that lasts, won't run or end up on your gown or guests, then definitely consider airbrush makeup.

The advantages of airbrush makeup are what the perfection-of-beauty bride desires:

  • long-wear
  • sweat resistant
  • melt-proof
  • transfer resistant
  • non-staining

How to Get the Air Natural Bridal Look

Opting out of the traditional beat face, neutral look and a lifeless ‘fro, makeup artist Staci Richburg and Natural Stylist Camille played up natural features and hair texture beyond my every day look.

Staci and I both loved Jay Manuel's Manual Override Prepare Silicone Primer. My makeup stayed put past the shoot way into the evening. I was over the moon plopping into Staci's makeup chair for my first airbrush makeup application. Consider this proposal of an air natural colors with a hint of drama makeup look an option — I do!

Makeup Look: natural colors with a hint of drama

Face
Prepare face with Jay Manuel's Manual Override Silicone Primer. Mix MAC Concealer Select MoistureCover in shade NW40 and Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer in shade SX #13 to cover dark spots. Spray half matte and gloss airbrush makeup. Set with MAC Powder Select Sheer/Loose in shade NW45. Also dust with Jay Manuel Manual Override Radiant Dimension Face Building Powder Duo bronzer in shade Tan.

Eyes
Laura Mercier Metallic Crème Eye Colour in shade Alloy on lid, then NARS Single Eyeshadow in shade Nepal as highlighter and in shade Bali allover. Blend. Apply Jay Manuel Manual Override Thickening and Lengthening Mascara Duo and MAC Loud Lash in shade Noisy Black.

Cheeks
NARS in shade Lovejoy as blush from nose bridge to hairline then shade Angelika on apples of cheeks.

Lips
Shu Uemura Lolishine Rouge lipstick in shade 344 topped with NARS Lip Gloss in shade Triple X.

Hair Style: Tightly defined curls with a healthy, glossy shine

Mix Jane Carter Solution Nourish and Shine, ICE hair gel and Carefree Curl Gel Lite Activator together in palm of hand.

Use fingers to quickly run through all over head.

Define natural curls by coiling individually before product dries.

Taper down edges by using multiple fingers to smooth down hair between temples and ears.

There's no reason to have cold feet about this technique.
